“You shall not defraud or oppress your neighbour or rob him; the wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until morning.”
Dear people of God, the Lord Jesus Christ made us understand who a neighbour is, in the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). A neighbour is any person you have come across in the course of your daily life and not just the person you live next door to at home.
Today’s lead Holy Bible text warns us against defrauding or oppressing our neighbour. Furthermore, it warns against holding on to a hired servant’s wages all night until morning.
What this means is that you must pay someone who has worked for you. It is amazing and pathetic to see employers of labour who are making profits through their efforts and those of their employees but when it is time to give the employee his wages, the employer comes up with all manner of excuses.
In certain cases, the employer cooks up false stories about missing funds and even goes ahead to deduct the falsely declared funds from the employee’s wages.
It is equally sad to see a person who has contracted a technician or artisan and after they have agreed on the work scope and amount payable for the work, they draw back and refuse to honour the contract terms and pay the artisan even where the work is confirmed satisfactorily done.
Conversely, there are employees who do not put in the agreed number of hours of work but are more than eager to receive a salary when the date falls due. This is a case of defrauding your employer.
Such people resume work whenever they like and close whenever they like and are full of complaints as to why the employer is not worth working for. Some even own their private business and spend office hours attending to it rather than attend to their employer’s business for the wages they earn.
If the employer is not worth working for, why are you still there receiving salary for little or no work done?
Another case of defrauding your employer is through over invoicing in collusion with equally fraudulent suppliers to the company. They fraudulent employees tells the supplier to increase the unit cost of the supplied item and they both share the excess amount above the supplier’s profit.
Some fraudulent employees even force the organization’s suppliers to part with a percentage of their profits before they release their payments for a satisfactory job done. Some also force the supplier to pay money upfront to them before they can issue a contract to them.
These last two examples is very common in the public sector of most countries especially developing countries. It also happens in the private sector organizations.
In fact, this practice is so bad that when the suppliers see that you do not demand for any compensation from them whether upfront or after the job, they are amazed because they are not used to dealing with upright employees whether in private or public sector organizations.
Let us see what the Lord Jesus Christ says in Luke 16:12, “And if you have not proved faithful in that which belongs to another [whether God or man], who will give you that which is your own [that is, the true riches]?”
Dear friend, it is sad to see many, even those who profess Christianity engage in these unethical acts and on a daily basis they pray to God to bless them.
How can God bless you when you have violated His Word in the Holy Bible? Don’t you know that God has given us His Word as a guide so we can both enjoy His blessings here on earth and depart from here into eternal life with Him in Heaven when we obey Him?
Don’t you know there is eternal punishment for these unethical acts if you depart this world in sin? Don’t you know the Bible says all wrong doing is sin? – 1 John 5:17a.
If you are guilty of one or more of these acts, today and now is the time to repent for tomorrow or later may be too late.
May the good Lord bless you as you heed His Word this day, act on it and share with others in the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
